VAT registration

Hi all

Just wondered if anyone had applied for VAT registration lately and how long they had to wait to receive the number, my client applied on April 21st and they have still not received anything except the confirmation email to say HMRC have received the application despite the website saying that they hope to process it in 10 days but it may take up to 30 which has now passed.

Anyone else applied recently and if so how long did you have to wait?

Cheers

Hi Doug
Not done any recently. Guessing its probably volume driven (or HMRC generally creaking at the seams!). Im also guessing there is bog all on their website to explain any delays? I seem to recall they say wait 6 weeks before you chase - but I could be wrong!

Thoughts are my own/not to be regarded as official advice, which should be sought from a suitably qualified Accountant.

You should check out answers with reference to the legal position

Cheers Joanne, I will give it another week or so and give them a ring, I just get impatient when things don't happen within the timeframe given (I know I should know better)

Hi Doug

I've done a couple in the last month or so, and had the VAT number within 2 days both times. Might be worth checking with the client what they actually did, and whether they have checked their messages? (assuming clients receive the details in the same way that we do when we apply on their behalf?)

Hi Helen

Thanks for the reply, 2 days that is impressive I will check in with the client on Tuesday to see if he has heard anything if not I will give them a ring.

Cheers

In my recent experience, the actual registration process is only taking 2-4 weeks. What is lacking is clear HMRC correspondence confirming this! But you should receive a letter notifying you of your VAT number. If you have not received that, do chase them.

Cheers Les , I will speak to the client tomorrow and if they still have not received anything I will give HMRC a ring to find out what the delay is

Finally got it sorted, email was sent to the client on 9th May to tell him to check his Gov Gateway account for the number which he obviously didn't and it is now no longer on there so they are going to post it out.

Spent over an hour on the phone to HMRC sorting this and the Class 2 NI from my other post out but at least they are now done (hopefully)

Cheers all for the help
