I've been doing books for family and friends for a while now, but I've now decided to branch out and quit the 9 to 5. I only want to offer book-keeping services and not touch tax returns etc. I want to use my initials in my business trading name i.e. KC but should I call it KC Bookkeeping or KC Accounting. Not sure what the difference is, but need to get this sorted before I spend some dosh on business stationery!
Because you've stated you want to concentrate on book-keeping, I would personally call your business KC Book-keeping. If you use accounting it implys you offer accounts prep and all the associated services i.e. tax. Obviously it's it's a personal choice, but I would use book-keeping if it were me.
I agree with Guy, if you include accounting in your business name the expectation from prospective clients is that you do accoutancy work (including tax prep) as well. I think it's best to stick to bookkeeping, you can always add other services later on.
Being a Certified Bookkeeper indicates that you have the required bookkeeping knowledge which is a great start. If I was you I would go to my local library and borrow some books on marketing and sales techniques. You will then be able to devise a plan of action to try and obtain your first few clients. I started slowly with just a few clients at first, just so I could get the hang of actually running my own business. You can then build your bookkeeping business from there.
