Hi everyone, I am totally new to this and have just passed an ICB recommended course up to level 2 in manual bookkeeping and also their level 1 exam. I will be doing the level 2 exam next month. Now here's where I need your advice. I want to earn part time money at home and in the area I live in (which is quite rural) there is alot of sole trader type businesses. I have the knowledge (I know I need to keep learning) accademicly, but to be honest I think untill I do my first set of books in the real world, I wouldn't know where to start. I know of at least 2 guys who are just about to start off doing general building work and maintainence in the local area. If I were to offer my services(even for nothing to gain experience) how would I approach it? what would be the easiest way for them and myself to get them up and running and what sort of books would you suggest I start with,i.e. purchase/sales ledgers, extended cashbook etc? I hope this makes sense and thanks for any help. Regards Geoff
I suppose in a way you have found a place to start.
It would probably be much more beneficial for you to work alongside someone, maybe in a practice. You would at least otherwise need a very good practical knowledge resource to draw on (possibly forums to a certain extent)... and really use whatever resources you can to get the job done - again, probably more beneficial to work alongside someone.
I'd also forget about any manual systems... use a fully computerised accounting system - even the MS Office Accounting Express (or full professional version which I think is still free for accountants).
Do you have any software already?
Certainly doing the work for free might help people give you a chance, but it won't help you earnt money part-time from home. Maybe at a serious discount, or low fixed rate?
Do you know these guys personally? I'd probably present it to them as an opportunity for them to get a very cost-effective service, whilst it gives you the experience and starts your client base.
Do you have an accountant you can possibly work alongside? To pass the year end and tax side to? Might help teaming up with someone locally where you might also ask the odd question and get assistance, but also pass work to.
Best of luck, any ways we can help please do let me know.
