I'm new to this forum but finding it really useful as I'm setting up a bookkeeping biz at the mo.
I've had a potential client contact me and they've asked for a CV and references. Is this normal when you're self employed? Just a bit suprised at this as I only thought CV's were required when you were looking for a full time job.
I've seen potential clients ask Chartered Accountants for a CV in the past... it's not common, and not a 'requirement' but if a client wants to know a little about who they will be using it's something you are best to be prepared for.
I know it can be difficult if you don't have qualifications - or especially proven experience and references - but if a potential client asks for a CV, and they don't see one, it is probably not likely they will become a client... unless you can convince them you are capable and maybe even offer a trial period to prove yourself.
Have you previous experience bookkeeping? Personally I don't think bookkeeping's something that can easily be done without having experience working alongside someone more experienced.
If you don't yet have experience, it might be good to get in contact with some local accountants that can help you, and where you can pass the more complicated work to - and of course ask in the forums! Best of luck with your new business!
I too was a bit taken back when I was first asked for a CV, in fact I thought at first they were being a bit rude - didn't they know i was self-employed!
After time though I've learnt to my benefit that having a simple but concise CV was a great way of making a new client (who didn't know me from Adam) feel more comfortable about using my service. Although I didn't have any experience when I started out (other than the theory), I found offering references which the client could contact helped. I used a previous employer and my next neighbour. I don't think that many clients actually contacted them though!
If it's been a while since you last wrote a CV try the net as there are loads of sites offering advice and even templates.
