bookkeeping study - textbook or tuition provider ?
Permalink Closed

Dear all,

I have carried out some research and decided that AAT isn't for me at the moment and so my choice came down to either ICB or IAB to become a qualified bookkeeper

I also found on both of their websites that they have text books
- the ICB use a Kaplan text to cover levels 1 & 2 at £27, and
- the IAB produce their own at £20 for each level

any one out there used these publications and is it possible to learn from self study from these ? or is tuition support really necessary

as I wote on a previous posting I've completed a foundation bookkeeping course which dealt with the cash book, sales day and purchases day books and the basic double entry that these books require to post to the ledgers

also at the moment I don't have a great deal of "spare" cash to pay for an expensive course (but then again who does!)

£20-£40 'ish is much more my budget, than over £200 for 2 levels smile

Hi Scott,

I've just registered with the ICB and I am intending to use the text books instead of doing a course.  I ordered my text book direct from Kaplan as to order direct from the ICB you have to be a registered student, so more waiting time, and its is only £1 more expensive, but quicker if you want start studying.

I've only just received the text book, and basically it takes you through simple exercises, each chapter building on the last, so not too much to learn in each chapter, personally I think if you set your mind to it and dicipline your self to work through it in a methodical way then you shouldn't have a problem.  It has loads of examples with questions for you to work through with all the answers. I do have experience but do not have a qualification, but I don't think it makes too much difference if you have experience or not.

Best of luck with whatever option you choose.

Richard
