Excel Formula for subtracting 10% - any ideas?

Hi,

I would like a formula that allows me to subtract 10% off a value.  I've tried several times, and no luck so far!!!

May be a bit long winded but here goes.

In column A type the number you want to subtract from eg 100

In column B type the formula =A1*10%, this will give the value 10

In column C type the formula =A1-B1, this will give the value 90 which is 100 minus 10%

Then right click on the B at the top of column B, select hide and this will hide the 10 but still work out the correct result in Column B.

If anybody else has an easier way, let me know.

You could also use the following formula:

=sum(A x 0.9)

E.G. Orginal amount is £500, 10% off would be, =sum(500x0.9) = 450 i.e. 90% of the original amount.

Why not just...

=A1*0.9

Where A1 is the amount.

=A1*0.9 simple and worked. A bit puzzled though. How do you get 10% out of 0.9? Suppose it doesn't really matter as it did the job!

It is just a different way of saying 90/100 (= 9/10 = 0.9), which is the same as saying 100% - 10% =90% (=90/100)

@Dustin57 there is no need to use the SUM function for an arithmetical formula in XL. As John says, just go for =A1*0.9; in this case, the SUM function is actually doing nothing in your formula.


If I'd got hear earlier, I would have suggested:

A1: 100

B1: =(A1-(A1*10%)) - a few characters more, but a completely readable / understandable formula.
