Who should I target?
Permalink Closed

At the moment I have passed my level 1 in Basic Bookkeeping and am waiting until June 10th to take my level 2 exam.  I have recently started studying level 1 and 2 computerised bookkeeping, all with the icb.

I have been advertising in shop windows for a week now and have had no response, I know that its only early days but I am trying to be pro-active so I am going to send out a few mailers to some local businesses.

With little qualification and no experience - I know that I cannot deal with large companies or ltd companies.  I am looking to target sole traders and small businesses (hairdressers, gardeners, market traders) etc, but what about people who are VAT registered, should I avoid taking on VAT registered clients for the time being or take them on, on the understanding that I don't do VAT returns, that is a job for their accountants.

Sorry for all the questions, there just seems to be so much I need advise on at the moment

It does take time for any marketing method to work, the key is to keep at it. The early leg work and expense will pay dividends in the end!

When I started I only took on sole traders and start ups and avoided VAT registered clients. As these clients got bigger they had to register for VAT and I found myself completing VAT returns for them. As my confidence grew I started to take on VAT registered clients and eventually moved on to limited companies. Now I'm doing all sorts and really enjoying it!
