Hi I am thinking of setting up my own bookkeeping company. I have a degree in Accounting & Marketing and I am a part qualified ACCA member. I have 3 exams and 17 months experience to gain before i become qualified. However with my family commitments it is impossible for me to take up a full time job. Therefore i am thinking of working from home as a bookkeeper.
Do I need to have a practicing certificate to become a bookkeeper? Will I be able to get indemnitiy insurance without it? Is there anything else I need to consider?
You do not need a practising certificate in order to offer bookkeeping services to the public. However as you are a student of the ACCA you need to be careful that any bookkeeping work undertaken by you does not fall into their definition of public practice work. Public practice work includes accountancy and taxation work and requires a practising certificate from the ACCA. If you focus on preparing the books up to trial balance you should be ok.
Regarding Professional indemnity insurance have a look on this forum for recommendations. Be sure to shop around as quotes vary.
