There are many different and varied ways of advertising for clients, some more expensive than others. Do you have business cards? Do you know your target market and what you are willing to spend?
Busniness cards could be placed in a newsagents advertising space in their windows.
Putting a small advert in the 'handy numbers ' section of your local newspaper.
Writing to accountants in your area to try and get an appointment with them to see if they would pass your details onto clients they have that need a bookkeeper,
Networking; find your local/nearest meeting, there are a vast number of these around, some of them you can try out for one or two visits before you join.
Targe the small businesses in your area with a leaflet displaying the services you offer.
Business cards as Angela mentioned are very important, especially if you get out and start networking.
Get to some local networking event and just get to know people. Build relationships with people such as accountants, lawyers, graphic designers etc as these people also come into contact regularly with new business.
Let everyone know about your business, including your friends and any past work colleagues.
A website can be fairly important too, as many people will want to find out a lot more about you and try to get a feel for your business. Your website should target the clients you're aiming for - in look and feel as well as information.
Another very important thing to consider is not only how to find people or get leads, but what you can do to then convert them into actual clients.
In addition to thinking about what you can provide to sell your services to clients, you should also consider how you quote or present proposals. These don't have to be just about rates, but also how the services are delivered and the benefit to them. Use this to push for that final commitment from the client!
Hope that helps get your started!

You should invest in a nice website for your business.
Spread the word among your friends and neighbors about your new business. Let them know that you would reciprocate with a little 'Thank You' gift for referrals that result into new business accounts. Send out cards, brochures. Local accountants can be a good source, too. Good luck.
