My first Tax Return
Permalink Closed

I have received a tax return for the the tax year 6 April 2008 - 5 April 2009, however I only officially started trading wef 1 April 2009.  I called HMRC and they told me that I had to complete the form for the 5 days that I was trading.  I didnt get my first client until the 17th April but did spend money before the 1 April on things like stationery, business cards, training courses etc.  What should I do?  Would I be able to call HMRC and change my start date to the 6 April 2009 and fill in my first tax return at the next year?  My concern is that I am not making much money at the moment, I only have one client and so I dont really want to pay an accountant to do this one for me for only 5 days of trading, although I dont feel that I am confident enough to do it myself.  I do however know someone who could do the return for me although I would prefer to do it myself and save some money.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Terri

HI Terri

Is the Tax Return the short versioned tax return, if so this is really easy to do online. Think you get a guide with it which explains each box.

In my first year I got a long tax return which I completed on paper and was a lengthy process and was relieved at the second year being a short version. Wish I was still a sole trader as can handle the self assessment forms, now Limited Company dreading the Corporation tax form.
