I'm looking into setting up a website but I'm a bit of a novice at that sort of thing!! I have looked at webs.com, I can buy my name as a domain name and pay the extra so theres no adverts on it, would that be okay do you think?

Hi,

I had a look at webs.com. I think you need to be very careful with these packages. For a start $99 per year is £60 per year.

At the end of the year webs.com still own the domain, you don't. So you need another year, and another. After 5 years you've paid them over £300, that's if the prices never change, which they will.

I think that you need to think what your website means to you. You can easily get a decent website designed for under £100. That might sound a lot, but your domain name will cost you about £3 per year. Hosting you can get for a simple 5-10 page static site for about £10/year.

So your fist year costs are slightly higher at about £120ish. But year 2 it's £13, year 3 it's £13, and so on. So after 5 years you've paid about half.

Why don't you drop me an email or give me a call and I'm sure I can help you get a better deal.

Kris

Welcome to the forum!

If you look on Vistprint's website - they do printing and stationery but you can also design your own website. The thing is though that you have to do the website, they won't design it for you and they have templates for you to use. The rates start from about £5 a month (I think, you'd better check) and you get the first month free. I did the first month deal and decided that I preferred my original one so I called to cancel and they offered me a second month free.

Might be worth taking a look at?

Terri

Another important consideration is how easy it will be to modify/update your website.  For me, it's very important to be able to update my website, myself, as often as I want; but that may not be important to you.

Oh, this is my first post so I'd just like to say "hello" to everyone!

Thanks Terri; that's really kind!  I created it myself (from a 1&1 template!) and like to update it when I get the chance.

PS, I like the name of your business- very clever- I bet it comes in handy when advertising in the directories!

Hi Amy,

Welcome.

I also had a look at your website and think it looks great.

I haven't really started up my own business as such yet, just doing bits for people in my own time. Does anyone think it is worth creating a website before business is up and running or should I concentrate on increasing client base and experience?

Chris

Hi Chris

I always think a website is really important. Whenever I am looking for a product or service I use the internet and if someone is recommended to me I always like to look them up to learn a bit more about them.

I think a website will help with increasing your client base especially if you use SEO techniques to get your site high up on google etc.

Kind regards

Zöe

For me a website is important. But it wont be for everyone. You need to really ask yourself what it's worth to you.

What is the initial cost? What are the ongoing costs? How are you promoting it? Does that cost?

Finally I'd suggest you need to decide what purpose it has. Is it's purpose to sell, or just to provide information about you?

Will it generate enough income to pay for itself, or are you happy to make a loss on the site in order to promote your business.

I would say if the gains outweigh the losses, go for it. If not, leave it.

Hi Amy, welcome to the forum, I like your website also, I think the bit where you have put check out my qualifications is a good thing (for want of a better word) to put.

Also going back to the orig. question I believe it is good to have a website and to have it hosted on to google and other search engines, so that people will find you. I did mine with 123 reg and they are fairly priced also. Also put your business details on to free indexing sites eg free index which willget you more exposure on the internet.
