ICB III Payroll and Self Assessment
Permalink Closed

Hi guys,

I've been searching for ages and I was wondering if there are any textbooks which would be vaguely suitable for ICB III Payroll and the Self Assessment exam too? Or is it enough just to order past papers?

Also, is it Sage Instant Payroll that is required for the payroll exam? What would be needed for Self Assessment exam?

Any help, as standard, is gratefully received!!!

Tom.

Hi Tom

Sage Instant Payroll is the software of choice for the ICB. Not sure about any text books on the subject as I did a distance learning course.

As for the self assessment, the ICB recommended the main guide published by HMRC. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on the "Self Assessment Tax Returns Guide" (2008-2009), which is published by HMRC and issued to registered tax agents, which is basically the bible for the assignment (quite a hefty publication just over an inch thick) in conjunction with HMRC web site help sheets.

I got my 2008/2009 copy through the ICB but they at the time had a very limited number and soon ran out. I'm not sure what their situations is for 2009/2010. It might be worth asking HMRC if you can get a copy.

Hi Bill,

That's very helpful, thanks very much. Just ordered one from HMRC now. Apparently the ICB are releasing their own textbook on tax self assessment within the next few weeks.

I do have Payroll experience, but the ICB don't seem to be willing to send out mock papers - making it slightly tricky really!

Thanks for your assistance Bill - very helpful indeed.

By phoning the self assessment forms order line on 0845 900 0404. They just take your name and address - no more complications or payment!

Tom,

It could be that ICB are not willing to send out Payroll Level 3 mock papers because they relate to tax year 2005-06! And things have changed since then biggrin

Peter

They were sending out past payroll papers in 2008 when I took the payroll exam. Seems strange that they don't want to send it out even if the tables are for 2005/06 it would still give someone an idea of how easy or difficult the exam is or areas that they do not know enough about so they know which areas of payroll they need to read about first.

so if you do take the Payroll exam, what year would the exam relate to?

Hi

The ICB are still sending out past papers for the Payroll Exam as I received mine a few weeks ago and I think you can buy it on their website shop.

Mark

I've just been having a look on the ICB website as i'm wanting to try a past paper for level III Diploma in Payroll Management but when you click through they are not available for purchase :(

Just wondered if any one has a past paper that I could maybe buy off them? or any other suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks

Ann-marie

Hi,

I rang the above number and asked for the tax return guide 08/09 as I want to complete the ICB diploma in SA. I gave all my details and what they sent me was just a guidance leaflet on how to complete a self assessment tax return. Can anyone clarify exactly what it is I ask them for in order to get the full guide I need to do the exam?

Do I have to be already registered as an agent? If so who do I ring to do this?

Thanks, feel like I am going round in circles!

Carole

Hi Carole

You might want to have a look at my little rant about signing up for self assessment

http://www.book-keepers.org.uk/index.spark?aBID=106474&p=3&topicID=34081187

The title of the book is "Self Assessment Tax Returns Guide 6 April 2xxx to 5 April 2xxx" and it's about the size of a telephone directory.

I got mine through ICB but I don't think they do that anymore. I would suggest contacting the helpline for agents on the HMRC site, as it is normally only for agents & advisers. I know some others have managed to get copies.

Bill

Just found an online order page at HMRC. It might be worth trying

Hi Bill,

unfortunately this was what I was afraid of, I have read a few of the threads on registering as an agent and this is why I thought I might be able to get my hands on the guide without having to register as an agent, just to do the exam. I don't have as yet any clients to do SA returns for so I can't register by sending in a 64-8 for a client so therefore I may struggle getting this elusive 'agent reference code'.

Ah well I will try to ring my local tax office again tomorrow and see if I get any joy.

Thanks,

Carole

Morning Carole

From what I can gather, reading other peoples experience of trying to get one, I don't think you need to be registered to get a copy.

I have just looked at my 08-09 copy for any reference numbers and there doesn't appear to be any.

The only references I can find on it are on the back cover
Issed by: Customer Information Delivery
Printed by Adare Group HMRC 12/08 5010920

0845 900 0404

I know you have tried the above number but its the HMRC central form ordering department (based down here in St Austell) It might be worth another try, you might get someone who knows what they are talking about!!

Bill

Hi Mark

Not to worry. I'd looked for a way to pm someone on here and hadn't found the facility. I inferred, incorrectly, from your message that it was possible.

Cheers

Neil

Thanks Bill,

I phoned that number again and this time got a helpful lady who knew what I was talking about.

She asked for my agent ID and obviously I don't have this yet so after speaking to her manager she informed me that I had to write to the SA agent maintainer and gave me an address in long Benton. Guess it's worth a shot but in the meantime I have a few people I know who are willing to let me do their tax return for 09/10 so I may just wait now and register as an agent by sending in a 64-8 once they confirm they want me to do the work.

Thanks again,
Carole

Thank goodness someone is getting somewhere with HMRC

I've tried all day to get through to CAA but I think they've left the phone off the hook

(May have joked yesterday about them being the CIA but I notice they do have a form called FBI - I thinks it's a conspiracy against me!! Just realised I have mentioned FBI and CIA on a forum, will probably have my phone tapped now)

What! And you think mentioning HMRC hasn't already earned a phone tap Bill! This is the entity that uses anti terrorism laws to combat tax evasion.

Always remember that just because your paranoid doesn't mean that they're not out to get you!

Hi Bill

Sorry I forgot, I was so happy because I had just agreed 1 day per weeks work with a new client, (subject to checks) that it completely slipped my mind.
I am up there again on Friday so I will go in then and report back

Regards

Mark
