I sent of a form 64-8 to become an agent for one of my clients, how do you know when you have became an agent and able to complete their self assessment, do HMRC send you a letter to say that you are the agent or do you just go on line and enter the details as normal???? Sorry haven't been in this situation before!
Just keep checking your account in www.hmrc.gov.uk under self assessment clients and it will appear once it has been processed. This is only the case if you have completed the paper version of the 64-8. If you have done the agent authorisation online, your client will get an authorisation code through the post which they will give to you once they get that through the post then you just log on and enter this code.
Sorry, just read your last post again. You said that you applied by letter as you were setting up as an agent. If you apply by letter, you have to physically write on this your HMRC agent self assessment code. Did you not have this then ??
Yes I had my agent code just before, by calling the local tax office, sorry didn't explain clearly, but I sent off a paper version of the 64-8 with my agent code, wishing now i didn't! should have done it online, next time I will do it on line. I also applied to be the agent of the client on the same day that they registered self-employed (by post again!)......it hasn't been the best planned scenario but it is a new client that was late in informing HMRC of self employment.
