i just wanted to say hello to everyone out there in computer land!!
i joined this forum site earlier this week, and posted a little cheeky message looking for work!
thought i would introduce myself properly as i'm thinking of staying around for a while, probably a very long while!!
ok where to begin? well strangely as it seems i am studying manual bookkeeping, through a home learning provider, not had any problems, and the tutors are helpful. i took and passed my level 1 exam in august this year, was really pleased with myself as i gained a 99% distinction. i am just finishing my last assignment, covering year end adjustments, and i am hoping to send that for marking by the end of the week, then its onto my level 2 mocks, and hopefully plan to sit the level 2 exam in feb 2010.
then im not to sure on what to do next to be honest with you. i had originally planned to set up as a bookkeeper working from home, now i know that i am going to need practical experience, hence looking for a job. the scary thing is i have never even worked in an office before, (except to clean them! lol!)so any advice on the best route to take from here would be greatly appreciated. sorry the reason its strange that i'm studying bookkeeping is that i nnever even thought about doing anything like this before. mainly because i left school at sixteen, had my daughter at 17, and always did the odd jobs that fitted around her, and then 3 years ago and 2 step kids later, i gave up my job (mobile cleaning) to look after the kids, last year i was pulling my hair out with boredom wondering what to do next, and someone mentioned studying from home, so then i decided on bookkeeping and not looked back! i have thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the neatness of it!! it appeals to my meticulous nature!! so there you have it a little!! bit about me, i look forward to sharing any knowledge / advice i can, and i'm sure i'll be asking for some in the future too.
Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your exam results.
If you wanted to get started with some experience you could always do voluntary work for local organisations (I don't know if your children are involved with any groups such as brownies, dance or sports clubs who might need some bookeeping assistance?)
Alternatively, speak to some local accountants in your area and ask if you can do some work experience. Speak to them in person, if possible, rather than writing a letter as letters are often ignored! This will give you hands on experience with guidance for any areas you aren't sure of.
Hi Kal, welcome to the forum and nice to meet you.
I have only just joined in the last couple of days and have already found lots of useful posts and people have been very helpful .
Good luck with your level II manual in Feb, I may be joining you.
Oh yes, I know what you mean about the boredom, having 2 kids 6 and 4 myself. I have had 5+ years of it and so ready to get my teeth into something that taxes my brain a bit!
I like you am fitting bookkeeping, both work and studying around my children and although it can be tough to juggle sometimes, it is a great home career to fit around your family.
wow, thanks to all offering warm welcome, zoe,- what a brilliant idea, i hadnt thought of local clubs, there are a few brownie/scout groups and others quite local think i'll ask around tomorrow. i was also thinking about finding some local accountants, mainly to ask for a job, but asking for work experience sounds good too, (even at 31!!!) thank you. carole, i love your bookkeeping name, have a few rolling around my head, i thought that i would call my business (when i get it started!) little boxes, then my daughter (bless her little cottons) told me it sounded like i was advertising boxes, so thats a no no!!! the boredom bit had made me feel like i was wasting my brain cells, so bookkeeping was to see if they actually still worked, or whether the kids (13, 7 & 5) had turned my brain to mush, luckily for me the grey matter is working quite well!! thank you for the good luck wish, i may need it, good luck to you if you do sit yours to, i'll be sitting it somewhere in birmingham, where abouts would you be sitting yours? thanks again and i'm sure we'll be chatting on here regularly. terri,- thank you too, yes sometimes it has been hard to juggle studying around the kids, luckily i have the day while they are at school, if i dont study in the day, (as there are always other distractions, like making a cuppa, washing up, and finding hiding places for the books when they get a bit scary!!)then i take over the kitchen table, and they all think i go mad as i talk to the books!!! at the end of the day i tell them (and myself) and that once i'm qualified and earning it'll all pay off in the end and be worth it. good luck with your studies too thanks again kal x
