Payroll Mock
Permalink Closed

Hi Folks,

Doing this mock Payroll 2008/2009
Entering data in to Sage Payroll

2 Problems i've come across and looking a litle encouragement.

It says to enter the Tax Code as (Standard Personal Allowance) i checked the net and found it to be 6035 = so i enter 603L

i have to enter in a person who's DOB is 30/8/39.  This would make him 69YRS
On Checking the net it say personal standard allowance is for that age is 9030
so would i enter 903L as his tax code.

Hope im right.
Many thanks in advance
Ronnie

I don't know about mock exams but in reality tou would enter the code from a P45 or the code from a P46 unless HMRC has issued the code. I'm not so sure you could just enter what you believe should be the correct code, what about year to date earnings/tax, will it be month 1 or cumulative, is there any under paid tax in the year. Like I say, maybe it's different in a mock exam though.

Also don't forget to see if he has an Age Exemption NI coding, as at that age he wouldn't be paying NI.

The 2008/2009 Payroll starts on 6th April 2008 so yes you would have to change tax code for the new tax year.

Folk,

This has got me stumped here.

Have to enter data as of the start of the year 6 April 2008
When i enter data into the sage system i.e name, address, Standard Personal Allowance etc the tax code is defaulted to 543L.
Would this be the standard personal allowance at that time (6 April 2008) i only have to run the payroll for the first 8 weeks of the tax year - given that the changes are pre budget 6035

Really getting frastrated here as i know i can do the rest of the exam but cant wrap my head around how to enter the data from scratch.

Need some serious help here?
Thanks
Ronnieconfuseconfusedisbelief

Ronnie,

Have you looked at the legislation settings for your Sage product? It does seem strange that you have '543L' as a 'default' emergency tax code because the standard personal allowances for the years 2007-8 and 2008-9 were £5225 and £6035 respectively. I suggest you double-check the other settings like NI bands before you go any further - see http://www.contractorcalculator.co.uk/TaxTables2008.aspx for correct values.

Sorry cannot be of more help.

Get what youre doing Ronnie, the bandwidths are wrong. If you click onto company setting & bandwidths check that the correct ones are in place. On the exam papers it will always ask you to check the bandwidths before you start the paper. Well, this is how the IAB done them anyway.

Didn't the allowances change in September of one year because of the 10p rate of tax being done away with? Will this have anything to do with it?

What I am trying to say is it might have been 543L at the start of the year but by the year end it would have been 603L after the change.

Or was this another year completely - years seem to fly by when you're older.
