Conventional wisdom has it that a .com web address gives more clout to a business web presence. On the other hand .co.uk tells people you're in the right country (and is also a little bit cheaper).
Does anyone have as bit more certainty about which to opt for, given a choice?
We're offering a local not global service so to me it makes sense to use the country suffix rather than the generalised one.
Just my opinion though.
Shaun.

My personal opinion is that it will depend on your business (and aspirations). If you intend to do international business then I would say a .com but if you business only serves the UK then .uk.
I know that if I do a search for a product or service I specifically look for .uk, unless I am looking for something that I know can't be obtained in the UK

I'm not sure I am ambitious enough to think international but it would be a shame to rule it out. I like the linking idea, Rob. I think that's what I'll go for.
Most of our website clients buy both and link them - it stops other people buying your name as well. We use the co.uk address as .com is more american and mainly used for international companies.
I too prefer .co.uk but it may be worth buying both and linking same website to each
Actually you can buy as many identical (or similar) names as you like, and only have ONE of them as a website on a server. The rest can be "programmed" to divert to the website.
Most of the larger companies do this. eg: www.vodafone.tv, www.vodafone.info, ... all divert to www.vodafone.com www.vodaphone.co.uk, www.vodaphone.info, ... also get diverted.
However, some companies buy domain names in the hope of making big money selling them to the genuine company eg: www.vodafone.org.uk/

Hi Bob, that's your technical side coming out, I have to admit understanding none of it! I am definitely a 'pay a man who can' type of person...my partner thinks she has found the wrong man to shareher life with and having just read your bio with all your practical skills, I think it was you she was looking for!
