I have just started bookkeeping after finishing my exams. Sent out an email to a few local accountants yesterday and have had a reply from one saying to pop in sometime to discuss how we can help each other out. So really pleased to get a result straight away.
I'm going to phone in the morning to make an appointment to see him - but my question is - what do I do? Is there any key things I need to make sure I do/say when I get to speak with him?
No doubt he will want to know how experienced and profficient you are. Take your certificates. Tell him what you are happy doing, books in a bag as well as well organised books. Manual and computerised (Sage, QB?). If manual will you produce an extended TB? Are you happy preparing accruals, prepayments, depreciation, analysis of drawings, motor expenses etc etc. What is your hourly rate.
He will also want to get into your future client base too!
Thanks Rob, I think I'll start to put together a portfolio. As I haven't any real experience apart from my own and husbands books - should I take any examples of work? My qualifications are all computerised - maybe some examples of reports etc that I've done???? What do you think?
I probably wouldn't do that (others may), he would have seen bookkeeping before and I would just try to exude confidence and talk the talk. If he wants to see anything you can always show him later, but client's records are confidential so just be positive.
