Can VAT be reclaimed on mileage expenses?
Permalink Closed

I've taken over accounts where employees are paid 28p / mile for business mileage done in their own car.

Couple of questions for the 'experts' out there please ....

a) I was under the impression that mileage should be paid at 40p / mile. Is this at the company's discretion?

b) I've been told that you can claim VAT back at 2p per mile - is this right?

Thank you, Deb

Yes it is at the discretion of the company but with the price of fuel most employees would not be happy with 28p. HMRC will allow up to 40p oer mile for the first 10,000 miles to be paid tax free, thereafter it is 25p.

Yes vat can be reclaimed on mileage, I haven't checked the amount, I know it is very low and often not worth the hassle!!

That's great, my guardian angel today Rob! First time on the site and I've had questions answered that have been sat with the accountant unanswered for nearly 3 weeks.

I've heard that mileage is rounded up to 2p per mile which is simple to work out and probably worth doing when you've got employees claiming daily mileage.

Thanks again, Deb
