Payroll course

Hi everyone, Can anyone advise me on a good payroll course, I have been quoted over £1000 from one college which I have decided I won't be enrolling on, or can anyone recommend any good self study books which will be alot cheaper than taking a course, but which will have enough information in for me to sit the exam.
I am interested in both the computerised and manual payroll..

Lisa

I'm doing my ICB courses with Ideal Schools.
That is manual Bookkeeping Levels 1, 2 & 3. Computerised bookkeeping Level 2. After that I'll probably be going for this course on payroll :
http://www.idealschools.co.uk/courses/institute-of-certified-book-keepers-icb/default.aspx?id=9999&n=223&cid=50&pid=714&clid=0

£499 for this course.

I paid £160 through Sue Holmes, shes on the council of the IAB.. If you link to IAB website & go to studying she will be on there. I did level 3 with no tutor help so may be a little more and just took the exam at our local college. I self taught manual payroll as theres nothing to learn really once you understand he principles of payrol.

Lisa,

Would you be comfortable taking a self-study course? Sage offer an Instant Payroll Self-Study pack consisting of CDs and workbooks for £45. Both manual and computerised aspects of payroll are covered. Also, the pack entitles you to a 180-day free trial of the software. I bought the v11 version a year ago and found it very useful.

All the best

Sage tutorials are very good, I attended their trining centre years ago when starting out, & they offer a wealth of experience.

Thankyou everyone for your replies, I have looked into the sage self-study packs and I think thats the way I am going to go, I also may have a look into the sage tutorials, but thanks again everyone you have been a great help.

Hi Lisa
Learning how to use Sage Instant payroll is not really sufficient when you consider a bookkeeper would need to have more than one company with a maximum of ten employees as a client. Training Link provide the ICB diploma in payrol management using sage 50 Payroll Professional. www.training-link.co.uk
You dont get a fully licenced version of the software with the course but you do get 180 days use of it which is more than sufficient to learn how to use it and also pass the ICB exam. The course is a blend of manual calculations, theory and computerised payroll. You can see the details on their web site or give them a call.

Thankyou for your reply, I have looked into training link but it does state that if you do the payroll management course that you have worked in payroll before, but they don't seem to offer a beginners course, i'll probably give them a call and see what they recommend.

Thanks again.

Hi Lisa
I just had a look and it is for beginners. I have pasted below the opening line of information from the web site.
The ICB Level 3 Diploma in Payroll Management course is designed for complete beginners and for people who want to gain a recognised qualification in Payroll. It's for people who have previously worked in payroll and have not received a qualification or wish to return to working in payroll and need to update their knowledge.

I think it should say something like "Or for people who have previously worked in payroll.

Let me know how you get on

Gaz

Hi Gaz

Oh yes, sorry I must have read it too fast, yes i'll let you know how I get on, I was going to do a self-study package from sage, but I think its probably better to do a course as I think it may cover more and atleast you will have a tutor on hand, just wish i'd known about them a year ago when I spent £1,300 just on studying bookkeeping level I and sage level II no I see they only charge £475, oh well you live and learn!!

Hi Lisa
I bet it was Home Learning College who charged you over the odds. It does pay to shop around.
God luck

Hi Lisa

If you are working in payroll, can I suggest that you look into becoming a member of the Institute of Payroll Professionals (IPP)? To be an asscoaite member costs £124 a year and you will not only receive updates on changes to legislation, but an Advisory Service to answer any questions that crop up - have a look at the website http://www.payrollprofession.org/index.asp?s=membership&p=reasons

The IPP also offers training and professional qualifications, but I'm not sure of your budget. There will be low cost online training offered later this year.

Kind regards

Vickie

This is something I have been thinking of doing for a while also - and didn't know what to do for the best - and as cheaply as possible!

Please pass on anything you think may be worth knowing and vice versa smile
