I tried but was told I had to be a registered agent. I only wrote a few weeks ago though to get the agent reference code and it arrived today. Make sure you include your phone number as they did phone me up to ask a few questions before they processed it, I wondered whether this is what speeded things up. Although a few people seem to have got them lately so get that letter done quick!
I then phoned the order line this morning and with the reference they said they would send it no bother. Will update if and when I receive it.
Good luck with it!

You write to the Central Agent Authorisation team (CAAT):
HM Revenue and Customs Central Agent Authorisation team Agent Maintainer Benton Park View Longbenton Newcastle Upon Tyne NE98 1ZZ
Just say in your letter that you wish to become registered as an agent for self assessment, that you understand that you need a self assessment agent code and could they please issue you with one.
I also gave them my Business name, Business address, phone number and tax reference.
Is there a phone number at HMRC to speak to someone about registering as an agent for SA? I found the address above on their website, apart from that they refer you to your local tax office about issueing an agent code and the local tax office refer you to the website (is this the classic catch of 22?). What I mean is the only way to register is in writing to the address above? Registering as VAT agent takes about 1 minute online, what's wrong with them reg.SA?
As far as I am aware this is the way they like to do it, I have not heard of anyone just phoning up and being given one other than people who are already acting on behalf of a client, having sent in a 64-8 form, whereby they have been allocated a reference number already.
I read the posting and thank to you guys I got to the posting a letter asking for a code in one day instead of the frustrating trying to get hold of someone at HMRC for weeks... I followed your link to their site (what i,ve seen before I just did not believe this is the only way) and at the bottom of the page i found the following little sentence: Centralisation will also help HMRC provide a more efficient, effective and consistent customer service. They are having a laugh? Efficient, effective and consistent? I shall post them the little oxford dictionary with my letter to allow them to look up the meaning of the words they are using... Anyway 21st century, let,s do everything online but the letters, they can,t let them go,they would miss them, opening the post in the mornings, the letters lost in post with no indication they are lost just waiting for the reply for weeks, etc. Sorry it,s just me moaning because i will have to walk to the post office.. ( no,not to the nearest one, they closed it down and no not to the second nearest, they closed down this one as well..)
Thanks for wishing me luck,Bill. I will need it by the look of it.
