Mileage question

Does anyone know if someone has two companies but just one car and they do over 10000 miles per year does the 10k at 40p threshold apply to each business or to the car?

I think that it is the person, rather than the business or the car.

Hi Rob

I don't know for sure but I would have thought that if it was two distinct ltd companies he would be an employee of each and as an employer, they would pay him up to the 10K limit each.

If the person is a soletrader and runs two distinct businesses, that he has declared separately to HMRC then I think again he could claim the 10K for each. After all you have to enter the profits independently of each other and each has expenses in their own right.

Going to start a new post that you may be able to answer for me now

Bill

At first glance this looks an easy question.  But I dont actually have a definitive answer.

There does not seem to be much printed about this query but a quick look at the guidence on the front of a P87( in the right ball park) states that if you have more than one employment please fill in a seperate P87 for each employment.  Each form P87 seems to give a new allowance.

In my experience I have never heard of an employer asking how many miles you have done in a previous employment or in a second employment.

I will be interested to hear the correct answer when someone has it.

Thanks everyone, I think we all had hunches it would be ok and Adi's P87 form idea seems to indicate this, so a good result!
