I've been doing voluntary work for some time now and have been approached by another friend do some more voluntary work. Both positions are as a bookkeeper and I've started to wonder about PI and MLR. As I'm not in effect working for them do I still need PI and MLR even though I'm not doing this for an income. Wouldn't want to get myself in trouble like.
With regard to MLR - you need to be registered if you provide accountancy services which includes bookkeeping, however, you don't need to be registered if you provide those services as an employee of the company (only if self employed). I would consider a volunteer more as an employee (albeit not a paid one) rather than someone self employed and therefore you would not need to be registered.
That's my reasoning on it but what that of HMRC would be I do not know.
I'm not doing them for any gain or as a self-employed book-keeper, I,m doing them for her like an employee would do them for a company that they are employed by.
this is what icb say : You are classed as self employed if you are invoicing clients for your work, or if you are working voluntarily or for free. If you are self employed you are legally liable for the work you carry out and must notify the Inland Revenue*, have a valid Practice Licence and valid Professional Indemnity Insurance.
*If you are working for free you do not need to notify the Inland Revenue you are self employed, but you do still need to be registered under the Money Laundering Regulations.
if you are not with icb i suppose scrape the practice lisence an PII bit but it still does leave you with MLR. Anyway that,s what is on the ICBs homepage about it but you better ask HMRC.
Had a look and don't think I will bother to be honest as there is no mention on there of applying for MLR if you do your own books, all I am doing is helping people and none of it is under my name as they still take full responsibility for the books produced ready for their accountant. If I was to be taking responsibility for the information provided then yeah I would need to be registered, or at least thats the way I see it.
Apparentrly you want to hope so , i've told both my "training" clients that personally i'm not anything to do with anything that has been stated. They either trust me or not.
