Apologies for this not being strictly on topic, but there is so much collective wisdom here that it seemed an obvious place to ask for a bit of help.
I'm part of a group that is looking in to setting up a national association. I can't give much information as at the moment it's all a bit hush-hush, but we're looking to break away from a well established national charity and be an umbrella organisation for self employed people who offer specific services to the public. We're at the stage of thinking about the legalities and formalities of it all. I have vague recollections of the legal structure of different types of organisation and how they run from my banking studies but that was a long time ago. Could anyone give me some pointers about what we need to consider?
Sorry, wish that I could help but it's not something that I've been involved with.
I knew the people who set up the BCS (British Computer Society) but didn't take particular notice whilst they were doing it (afraid to say that I didn't take them particularly seriously and now look at them!).
I do know that there main issue though seemed to be gaining acceptance rather than any specific legal issues. Maybe you should contact an entity like the BCS or one of the IT contractor organisations and ask if they have any pointers for your fledgling organistion. Also find out who their legal council is as that's going to be your main starting point.
I think that the BCS's key to success was getting text books published that went beyond their own exams and became industry standards. Of course on the back of this they have courses and exams which have become industry standards.
Keep us all informed of your progress though won't you as I must admit that it's occurred to me in the past to set up in competition to the ICB! (I know, I really should have higher aspirations!).
Good luck and sorry that I'm not more help,
Shaun.
