This may seem like a dumb question, a few people have asked me that once I have finsihed my training would I be able to do there self assessment forms and VAT returns. Is there any legal requirement other than having PII and MLR measures in place, to allow me to do this for clients?
Any advice greatly appreciated!

I do think it depends on who you are affiliated with and their rules about what services you may provide.
If you are not affiliated, then you can do both, the only obstacle is your ability! I only know the ICB route, so if a member and have a practising certificate and have passed the self assesment exam, then you can do both. I'm not sure of others but I'm sure Shaun will be along, as he knows much more!
As Philip says the limit to what you can and can't do is your own ability UNLESS you are a member of an institute which would place limits on what you can do based on what qualifications you hold. If you take MLR from HMRC you are not limited to the tasks you can undertake.
Im hoping to be accredited by the IAB as a member, once Ive finsihed with my studies. Ive done a few self assessments for my ex in the past for his/ our business. I take it the IAB offer courses to do self assessment and VAT returns?

I'm not aware of anyone other than the ICB doing SA exams, and they are not recognised by anyone!! Once you have the correct level for the IAB to practice, then you would be able to do the VAT returns, not sure about SA though, as many people believe this is an accountants area due to the tax implications.
However, I'm not an expert on IAB and have no idea what their restrictions are and at what stages....perhaps someone else will jump in....
