VT Cashbook

Hi all!

I'm new to this so please be kind! :)

Have been reading the forum for ages and its very helpful!

A little about myself, I've been working in as an accounts assistant for 9 years and have just taken my final Certified Accounting Technician exam (well it will be the final one if I've passed!).

A friend who runs a small business still has paper bookkeeping is thinking of going computerised, they do cash accounting for VAT.

I've read lots about VT Cashbook and understand that the free version doesn't have the facility to have supplier and customer accounts, so do any of you use this and how do you keep track of your debtors and creditors? I was thinking along the lines of using excel for this?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hi,

It does have customer and supplier accounts. I think the best if you download it yourself and see all the functions available. It is basic comparing to full accounting softwares but to me it seems to be ideal for a small business. It can do p&l, balance sheet and bank reconciliation. After working with SAGE I found it a bit difficult to see what I have to do (in fact it is too simple I had to realise) but once I got used to it I found it perfect for sole traders, etc.

You can trial VT for 60 days with no obligation to buy.  I get the feeling your knowledge of double entry bookkeeping has to be good to understand VT Accounts.  Is this correct?

Personally, I wouldn't say it was any more difficult to understand than any of the other packages I've used like Sage or quickbooks. Obviously a bit of knowledge of the mechanics behind it helps.

I have trialed quickbooks and you don't need any bookkeeping knowledge to understand it.  I even thought I was missing something, that's how easy it was to use.
