I know this is in the "Professional Book-keepers in Practise" section and I am not yet a "Professional Book-keeper in Practise" but I can't think of anywhere else to put it.

It is regarding the practicalities of offering a payroll service to small businesses - say weekly paid. What is actually done as regards the payslips? Do you post them out to the employer, employee? Or do you email the payslips out and the employer prints them themselves? I know it will vary business by business (I've been looking at the price lists offered by other payroll service providers) just wanting to know in reality what happens most.

I will be sitting my Level II Manual with the ICB shortly,
then Level II computerised,
then Level III Manual,
then the Payroll Diploma,
then the Self Assessment Diploma
so it will be quite some time before it actually matters. I just like to think ahead.

It all depends on what the client actually wants. I do weekly and monthly payroll. The weekly one emails me the figures, I then calculate and print everything off, then email the net amounts back so they can do the payments and the payslips get taken to the client to give to the employees.

Another monthly one is very much the same, just on a monhtly basis instead of weekly.

Hi Peasie

I do fortnightly and monthly pay runs for clients, we have agreed a timescale for the client to get the details to me and to which I have to return it by.

I have it set up that they send me the hours and rates of pay for each employee, process it and email them back all of the reports including payslips and net pay figures. If they wanted any reports or payslips printed I would charge accordingly. My fee is based per employee with a standard minmum fee chargeable.

Can I ask which learning provider you are going to doing your self assessment diploma with only I can find it on the ICB website.

I was just going to buy the manual from the ICB and work my way through that. I'm waiting to become a member so I get the £20 discount on the book. I haven't seen anyone doing a course on it.

No one does a course on it, thats why! It is not recognised by anyone except the ICB but if you have a practising cert with them, the only way to be able to do SA is to have the exam.

If you are registered as an agent with HMRC, you can get the 'bible' for free, although not sure whether the ICB one is the same or not.

I don't think the ICB book will be anywhere near as comprehensive as the big book as I'm sure I commented on the number of pages before. I'm sure I read somewhere that they were considering doing away with the big book and possibly issuing it only on cd in future. This was from a posting about three or four years ago. One of the vaguest posting I've ever made on here.

3 or 4 years ago! The book is still here so who knows....everything else is computerised so it would not surprise me one bit.
