Re-Fresh Knowledge
Permalink Closed

I was a lithographic printer for 29 years before redundancy forced me to re-train. I gained OCR levels 1 & 2 Diplomas in Manual & Computerised Bookkeeping from 2005-2007. In 2007 I also  gained OCR Levels 1 & 2 in Administration. I tried unsuccessfully to volunteer in a bookkeeping role to gain praticle experince. I am now a customer advsior for the Dept for Work & Pensions. I would like to re-fresh my bookkeeping knowledge with a view to supplementing my present income to start with. I still have my learning materials and a copy of Sage Line 50 version 10. Can anyone give me advice on how to do this without paying out too much in course fees? Thank you.

I know this may sound glib but how about reading/using a book to refresh your knowledge, if you still have some re-read them, if not try Frank Wood, or Margaret Nicolson books - by far the cheapest way.

For sage keep looking on Amazon for the courses when they reduce them (usually when a new version of sage is being launched) there are 1 - 3 and they come with Line 50 with a 180 day licence to enable you to practice. They also include certification.

Thank you, it wasn't glib. I just feel after all that studying and gaining that knowledge it's a shame to waste it. Would be great to meet/contact other people in a similar position.

Hi Eamonn

I re-trained in bookkeeping aswell through the ICB and found it difficult to gain employment.

The route i took was going for a part-time bookkeeping role, i personally found that there was less competition for part-time as opposed to full time. After a year or so of part-time i had gained enough experience to go for and get a full-time job.

Am now studying CAT to hopefully get into the job role i am aiming for.

I have found with the accounting profession that to move forward you have to keep on studying and looking at new developments, rather like the IT industry so refresh your knowledge through a sage course and have another go at it.

Nigel.

Thank you Nigel

I don't know who ICB are but I will Google them. I really feel I must move on this as money is tight and at least I have proved to myself I could gain the qualification albeit 3 years ago now. I too would like the part time freelance route. Once again thank you.

Eamonn

Hi Eamonn

If are looking to improve your skills for employment the CAT route would be best for you.  You can self study the CAT, which will help keep costs down.

The IAB and ICB are for people who wants to be self employed.
