You will be constrained by your membership assuming you have joined one of the bookkeeping organisations. But for most small businesses it is bookkeeping help they need. If they employ people or are on PAYE (eg. as a director of a limited company) then it is likely you will also be asked to do the payroll. You need to check that that is OK.

If you are NOT a member of any organisation, you can offer pretty much any service you like provided you have signed up with HMRC for Money Laundering Regulations. There is an article on that on my site below.

Thankyou Quentin for your reply, your Bookkeeping advice page is really helpfull.  I think i will have to get a Bookeeping job in a small company first to get a bit of experience and confidence and then a permanent residence with a land line as i am currently living in a room above the pub i work in...doesnt really send out the professional image that i will need!!

If i were to register with an association it will be with the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers, but do you reckon i should register when i am ready to go self employed or can i register even though i will be employed full time with in a business or accountants?? confuse

Thankyou once again!

There is a cautionary tale in the September ICB members "InVOICE" newsletter about a member who took on a client's payroll without being qualified to do it, cocked it up, while also letting her Practice Licence and MLR cover expire and is in real trouble now as her PII is invalid too  omfg.gif
It can be viewed in the members area on the ICB website... http://www.bookkeepers.org.uk/News/1100

So, before doing any kind of bookkeeping work you need to
- be suitably qualified
- have a Practice Licence and be registered for MLR supervision
- have protection of PII
