It is not mandatory to join a distance learning school for ICB certifications. You just have to register with ICB (£45) et buy past papers if you wish (£10).
Kaplan provides a really good book, which includes level 1 and level 2. There's a course book and an exercise book... And it is IMPOSSIBLE to fail the exam if you complete ALL the exercises :D (there are 90 questions covering level 1 and 2). You can buy these books on the site of the ICB (I don't see the exercise book anymore?) or directly at Kaplan's. (Course book : £22, Exercise book : £20)
If you are tightwad, you can read online Osbourne Books for the AAT by visiting the link below.

Do you know if the same can be said about the ICB level 3 exercise book as well? I have the level 3 course book but would want to do more examples than are in this book.
I don't have Kaplan books for level 3, so I cannot tell you if they are good or not.
However Kaplan has published a course book for level 3 (called Advanced Bookkeeping) and an exercise book.

- Course book for level 3 : ISBN: 9781847109156 (£30) - Exercise book for level 3 : ISBN: 9781847109316 (£15)
Both are directly sold by ICB.

Thought I would just add a little to this thread that may be of interest. I have just bought a copy of Mastering Book-Keeping by Dr.Peter Marshall for under £12 on Amazon and it includes past papers and model answers for ICB level 1,2 and 3 manual as well as past papers for IAB level 1,2,3 and 4. It might work out a bit cheaper than buying just the papers on their own,and also looks a good text book although I have only had a quick thumb through it.
Rich is quiet right; we have just released our 9th edition of our book mastering bookkeeping. It covers all levels in a clear and easy to read text book. It has copies of past exam papers. Its the only book recognised by the ICB and the IAB.
Its a great buy, especially if you're looking to go further in your book keeping and accounting career.
