I recently spoke to an accountant who told me pubs are not allowed to have tabs for customers - well, not allowed to take it to the next day or longer, he said it is against the law. Does anybody know anything about that?

Ok, it appears both I and your accountant friend are slightly out of date, at least in England and Wales. It was an offence under s166 of the Licensing Act 1964, but it seems with the introduction of the 2003 act there is no offence any longer for this.

It was repealed by the Licensing Act 2003 in England and Wales and by the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005.
It was causing difficulties in an age where people were paying a lot of things with credit card. If you bought food with alcohol you could use credit, but not if it was only alcohol.
