Does anyone know anything about gift aid.  One of my clients has recently signed up with Virgin just giving and they are asking for the company's HMRC number.  Does the company have to apply to HMRC for a gift aid number?  If so does anyone know how to do this?

I would have thought they just meant the companies CT reference?

Hi Sheila,

Take a look at this:- http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/individuals/giving/gift-aid.htm#6 or this http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/businesses/giving/self-employed.htm

I've not had any experience of Gift Aid, but don't know why they would want the Companies HMRC number as it seems to relate to individuals not companies (well Limited companies anyway).

Thanks Pauline unfortunately the link doesn't help as it's all about giving and we will be recipients.

It's not Corp Tax number or PAYE number, Virgin say the number is the one we use to claim Gift Aid ???? usually begins with an X then an R N or T followed by 7 characters and we should have received it on the confirmation letter for Gift Aid from HMRC.

We haven't had a letter from HMRC and don't know where to apply for one. We have paid Virgin Just Giving £117.50 to become a member of their scheme so I would have thought they would have organised this with HMRC for us.

I'm baffled.

Hi Sheila,

Have a look at this, mainly the section about claiming tax back on gift aid donations,
maybe that's the one you are looking for..

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/charities/gift_aid/basics.htm

They say

You don't have to register to claim Gift Aid but your charity must be recognised by HMRC for tax purposes. Recognition by HMRC as a charity is a separate process from registering with the Charity Commission for charitable status and you can get some more details from the link above.

Maybe the ChA1 form is what you need?

Thanks Atilla, that looks like what I am seeking. I've looked on HMRC but obviously not put the right thing in the search box!!!

Just spent most of the afternoon filling in the form and finding the required supporting documents - dontcha just love HMRC.
