I said elsewhere that it was going to be a straightforward thing. Should have known better.

The problem is the person that did his return the previous year (his ex-wife) has made a few mistakes on that return. It was a paper return.

He gets a statement of earnings and tax deducted each month and by the looks of things she has included an extra month in last year's figures. I don't know how many years he's been on CIS - I just think there are a lot of errors in previous returns. I thought I'd better get things clarified (and I will) but I think the "oddities" are just mistakes. There are basic adding up mistakes. If it hadn't been for these I'd have thought maybe they do things a strange way that I'm not used to.

For instance 2007-08 the accounting period is 6th April 2007 to 5th May 2008.
For 2008-09 the date your books or accounts are made up to is 04/07/0408. The previous entry had been scrubbed out.

If I get him registered online (and he gives me his password) - would I be able to see the figures for previous years online or is that only available if they have been submitted online. Similarly - the statements issued, would these be available online or is it only if the previous return has been submitted online.

Sounds a fun one!

As long as the tax return was submitted online using the HMRC software you will be able to view it and print a copy.

You should also be able to view all statements online irrsepective of how the return was filed.

Hi Peasie,

Unfortunately, you generally only get to see previously submitted returns IF they have been submitted online.

If you require a copy of a previously submitted tax return and write to HMRC, they should provide you with a copy. Nothing fancy, just:

Dear HMRC,
[client name]

We act for the above client and would be grateful if you could please supply a copy of the 2008/09 tax return.
