Was on way to Xmas party near office in Stockport, 180 miles away from home. Decided to turn back home after 20 miles, 2 hrs into the journey and make doo with fast food at stop over.
Never drove in such conditions in 15years of driving.
Also saw a snowball fight on the other side of M1 (pls note no vehicles moving)

considering the dubious nature of some of the Met office predictions over the past couple of weeks it's good to keep each other informed as to the reality of whats happening out there.
I normally drive from Cannock (slightly North of Birmingham) to Edinburgh each week. The thought of doing a 283 miles run in this weather is just a non starter as beside the obvious dangers, the risk of not being able to get back to my boy in time for Christmas is just too great.
The best that I've seen when the traffic was stopped (not in the snow for this one) was a guy on the opposite carriageway who opened up a burger trailer. Have to admire the entrepreneurial spirit behind that.

P.S. For anyone thinking of traveling cross country to Edinburgh the hills on the A702 around Silverburn and East Howgate are apparently more or less a toboggan run! Lifes too short, don't make it any shorter. Just stay home.

The advice given by some muppet on a radio phone in show was we don't get enough practise driving in snow so we should just get out there and practise.
Had to laugh at the argument between a woman and a truck driver both stuck on the motorway. The lorry driver saying the woman should not have been out on the road because she had two children with her and she said the reason she couldn't move was because of a lorry stuck on a hill.

As for the guy on the radio, maybe we would all get more practice in the snow if we all had four wheel drives and you could actually buy snow chains anywhere in this country!
Hope nobody with a rear wheel drive took his advice. Only good thing that I can think of about my rear wheel drive car is that at least there's a remote chance that I might just be able to reverse back out of the ditch that I've skidded into!
One bit of advice for people. Keep a couple of 25kg bags of Rocksalt in your boot. It givers you rear end traction and comes in handy if you get stuck.... Doesn't do great things for your fuel economy of course but as they say, what you win on the swings you lose on the roundabouts.

That brings back memories of driving around one winter with a brick in the passenger well of my front wheel drive!!!!!
Problem is many people do not know how to drive in snow. You see them skidding and putting their foot down, when we all (?) know that you use highest gear and lowest revs. Another good tip is to keep old towels or the like in the boot, so that you can put them underneath the wheels to get you going on ice or impacted snow.
If only everyone went slowly but surely up hill then traffic could move, it's when someone slides or stops that problems start as it's not easy to get going up hill after being stationary.
