What to do?
Permalink Closed

Im all ready to start my business, have practically everything ready.  The problem is and this is going to sound really silly but I haven't got a car.  I keep putting it off as there is no point in advertising if I cant collect the work.

Is anyone in the same position and/or have any suggestions, that would be great.

Still advertise. You might be surprised how many people will drop off and pick up - I have two that do this and I do have a car! (their choice as they pass quite often) There is also scanning and email, post - buy some strong plastic postage envelopes, address them and give them to your clients to post out their paperwork. Or cadge a lift......  biggrin

Hi Michelle,

I would go for it anyway, as Sue says most will drop off, I only have 2 that I have to go to the others all drop off when necessary, and one is withing walking distance anyway. So yo never know where they may live. Do you drive anyway or are you waiting to take your test?

There is always email or providing them with large envelopes, I'm sure there are ways round it.

Good idea on the plastic envelopes, will have to find some.  I only have a msn email address, do you think people will trust it, emailing their invoices.
Im looking at doing it part time as I work full time.

Hi
I think the email address will be fine, or if your not sure change it to your service provider ie like Sky, NTL, BT etc.

At least you do drive, so when funds permit you can get a car and don't have the worry or added expense of learning to drive.

You can work it around your Full-time job and just see how it goes. Are you looking to give up the Full-time job later when you have enough clients?

I only had a part-time job and did the bookkeeping and the proper job together for a while, but then as I got busier I gave the "proper" job and went totally self-employed, and haven't looked back at all.

I have 2 children so it has to fit in around them but does so quite nicely. Also if they are staying on at school with after school clubs which it seems to be alot of at the moment then I just stay and work longer until they need picking up.

HTH

I never really thought of it like that.  Do most of your client email or fax?

Yes - in fact we meet less than 10% of them. 21st century accountants!

Works well for internet businesses as they are used to dealing remotely maybe specialise on those. Do get up to speed on e.g. PayPal, have a look at Kashflow (has PayPal interface) etc

Just a couple of suggestions. Let me know how you get on.
