So I got some great advice regarding which course to follow for my studies and now my next big question is that I want to start offering a book keeping service in my spare time whilst I work and study but I am unsure which software to use?
It seems that a lot of companies use Sage and I have only ever used Sage but it is so expensive to buy the software? What about the idea of both the client and the book keeper being able to access the accounts through the web? By the looks of it this is not available with Sage but is through a program called Cashflow? I am not familiar with Cashflow, is it that different? Some clients have book keepers that come to their premises and therefore the companies will pay for the software? So many questions, I don't know where to start?
Hi, Im using sage instant accounts to study with but they dont do multiple businesses(unless you save to stick, rebuild data and reload each company), thats the big money sage packages, Ive just downloaded the free trial of VT Transactions which is proving good in some areas and confusing in others!
If you know enough to offer bookkeeping as a service freelance then you should be able to do it on excel, all accounting packages are just make it easier. Use the demos and have a play see what you think.

Interesting that Fiona mentions VT, I used to use VT for preparing accounts but not really for bookkeeping. Then took on a client who had been recommended it by his previous accountant, he balances it every month and it is really good! The other advantage is that you can have multiple companies.
Hi Chris "What about the idea of both the client and the book keeper being able to access the accounts through the web?"
We offer a month free trial - will give you an idea of how an online system can be used to run your future clients books. just click on link below.

the days of one size fits all, Ford model T style have gone. Each software has its merits and disadvantages.
Hope this helps
Dalbir ps: Being a bookkeeper is a responsible job, so best to reach a certain standard on your studies before offering you bookkeeping services. Also you will need to check on your governing body's rules (the body who will award you your qualification) and Money Laundering Regulations in regards to being a member in practice.
