When a bookkeeper also does payroll for clients how does this work in terms of the payroll packages? Do you use one payroll system or do you buy individual payroll packages for each client? Or does the client pay for this? I can't imagine how this would be set up on the computer as say you have lots of clients would you also have lots of payroll icons on the desktop for each one?
Dont know how other payroll packages work but i know with SAGE that you can get multi-client versions where you can set up more than one client on the same package (same as for accounts).
Believe it or not I use Sage Software ! You can purchase the accounts and payroll in multi user - and yes like Ken, used for years and still think its brilliant.
Unlike the accounts software I would always recommend yearly updates and support for the payroll. Can always price for you !!

I use moneysoft payroll 100 - have done for years. I get regular updates as the system checks for one every time I use it.
I have moved quite a few business, including accountants/payroll bureaus from both Sage & Iris to Moneysoft and not one have not regretted it - most origonally moved due to problems with updates either causing problems or not being available when needed, and got the additional bonus of paying less.
I don't know if Sage allows it, but with Moneysoft I can submit end of year returns early. I had 2 sole traders sell their businesses during 2010 to Ltd Companies, and a few weeks after I submitted the last p45's via the software, the HMRC wrote to me asking to submit the end of year returns etc, so they could close the payrolls. I was able to do in in minutes - submit the P14, P35's etc. When my P35 reminders came through, last month I didn't get any for these payrolls as the HMRC already had everything they needed for 2010/11. Last year I had all my payrolls finished including P11ds (as moneysoft does them too) before the HMRC stopped submissions at the end of March!

I use sage and by far the best, used money soft at a new clients to finish the year, it would not let us submit to HMRC as we had not paid to update for a new year, as they were outsourcing this to me there was no point. I thought this was very naughty as it was finishing a year they had already paid for. I certainly would not look into that option if I fell out with sage.

The licence must have run out during the previous year end. I have never had the problem you mention - but I have had it with Sage. I thought at first it was Sage you were talking about.
About 6 years ago, one of my client did not want to pay for another year for Sage payroll (due in January) and Sage would not give them the update to allow them to do the end of year return. They moved to Moneysoft without any problem.
Now with moneysoft everything needed to do a end of year return is there from the beginning of the tax year - the updates now tend to be just the HMRC changes only, so if the licence is not paid, then moneysoft will not allow submission the following year.
I too have never had a problem with Sage but I have also used Quickbooks and I found this a totally different matter and complicated to change figures.

I've not ued sage payroll for a couple of years, but then it did not handle CIS at all. Sage line 50 has the CIS module which does file the monthly returns to HMRC and for the subbie too and posts the tax automatically via the subcontractor (supplier) record. But that module is in my opinion (although I do have it, expensive for what you get)
I suppose strictly speaking CIS is not a payroll function, however I use Moneysoft now as everything re CIS is so much simpler, of course I also have to manually post into sage (via suppliers & CIS) but Moneysoft produces all the monthly returns (auto submission), monthly deduction statements and payslips. Will also handle retentions et etc etc, much simpler all round.
I am considering purchasing Money soft for the new year. I assume you filed year end returns last year without any problems? As I dont want to set up new clients and then get to the year end next year and have problems.
Jill - I started using Moneysoft in 2007. I filed the 2006-07 P35's in Sage and then started in the new tax year. It's been a breeze since then. I think we've had to contact the helpline about 3 times, and everytime the query has been resolved quickly (and from memory, our fault!).
I think it was one of those situations where you say "well, it's cheaper than Sage, but it does CIS, and it does this, and this, and it's so much quicker - what's the catch?" There doesn't appear to be one!
I've used AccountingWeb much more than this forum, and the level of support for Moneysoft on there is phenominal. The biggest concern that users have is that the guy running it will sell up to one of the big players!!
On here, there also seems to be a lot of support for 12pay (I think!), which I've not tried so I don't know how that compares.
I run both Sage and Moneysoft at the moment as I have more clients than Sage Licenses. I am very much a Moneysoft convert. It is so much simpler to use and I dont get the feeling of hands dipping in my wallet. Their support is great, the updates automatic. Everytime I have had an issue with Sage it takes ages to get through and then I'm told to get the "patch" update. I really do think that Goliath has met his match!!
hi there, i hope you are all fine i have a little confusion about something -the inland revenue defines the term pay as being which of the following? -holiday pay -tax credits -pay in respect of sickness or other absence from work -salary,wages,overtime,bonusses,honoria,commission,perks. thank you all for your support king regards olga
I suppose strictly speaking CIS is not a payroll function
Well ok it's not payroll, but: CIS monthly reports run to the 5th of the month, they are paid with PAYE, reported on the P35 - I think it's the old "if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, then it's a duck" thing!
