Hi - apologies if this question has already been asked and answered, but I couldn't find it here.
I can't seem to get this information from government website - if I advertise something for sale, should I state whether or not that amount is excluding or including VAT? I've always assumed that it's illegal not to state that information before a customer proceeds to checkout (not just on the invoice) but can't find any mention of it anywhere. Many thanks
In answer to your question, it all really depends who your customers are.
The guidance available from HMRC is :
Prices in advertisements, catalogues and price lists Products advertised in outlets, magazines, on the internet, or shown in catalogues, price lists and other literature may be aimed at the consumer, businesses, or both.
If they're only meant for the general public, they'll show you a price including VAT. This is a legal requirement.
If they're aimed at both consumers and businesses, theyll usually show a VAT inclusive price, but may also show a price without VAT. The VAT inclusive price must be given equal importance, but read carefully to make absolutely certain you understand what price you'll pay.
Prices aimed only at businesses are usually shown with no VAT included. VAT will be charged on top of the price shown.

Shaun - thank you so much for that. I feel a bit daft because I couldn't find that information on the hmrc website - sorry! Thanks again and for such a quick answer to my question. Best wishes, Jan
