I did a job for a company and I invoice them using my limited company and they are asking me for my UTR number, they are holding my payment until i can get it. how can i ge it?? thank you
for the invoice to be valid there are certain things that must be on it such as your VAT number where you are VAT registered and also your company number which you would normally just slip in the footer.
The UTR number though is something between you and HMRC. Can't understand at all why anyone would ask for that?
The only thing that I can think of is that your UTR is not on the companies house website where your other details are so it might just be a security measure to ensure that you are who you say you are?
Doesn't sound right but it's the only reasoning that I can think of for the request off the top of my head.... The other option of course is that it's a delaying tactic so that they can hold onto your money for longer.
p.s. forgot to mention. if you can't find your UTR anywhere else it will be on the cover of your paying in book for PAYE.

have you any objection to me stealing your disclaimer? It sounds a very sensible footer to some of my posts!

Yes exactly is a building/engineering company , if i can't provide my UTR they won't pay me as a limited company and i will have to go trough a umbrella company which i don't want to.
You will already have a UTR number it is your cororation tax reference., but you may need to register your Ltd Co for CIS as they will need to verify you with HMRC. If you are not registered they will deduct 30% tax from the payment - 20% if you are. The CIS deduction is made after deducting the cost of material used included in the invoice (your labour) if you are only charing for materials there is no CIS deduction. Make sure you differentiate the different elements on your invoice.
I'm not sure an umbrella company is the best way to proceed here, seems over complicated. Perhaps others could advise.
Of course all this only applies if you do construction related work for them ? if so you will be classed as a sub-contractor under CIS. If you are going to do this sort of work you really should explore all the rules relating to CIS as they are quite complex.
You can offset any CIS deducted (sufferred) from your PAYE payments to HMRC.
Hope this helps

When I read your original question, I thought it related to a job done under bookkeeping, as I think did others. However, from your second post, I think you've done some subbie work. If so, yes they would need your UTR number to verify how much CIS tax to deduct from you.
