Tax and AAT qualification
Permalink Closed

Hello

I am just starting up my own book keeping from home. I am AAT qualified but have been working for a company up until now. Please could someone explain if I am able to prepare and submit tax returns for soletraders? Whilst at college I studied Personal taxation and business taxation but I'm sure I was told that I could only do the work for limited companies. Please could somone advise me of what I am and am not able to do.

Thanks Vicki

You should be able to. You don't need any qualifications to submit personal tax returns. Many taxpayers do their own.

However, the AAT qualification has changed since I did it, so I could be wrong.

check with the AAT.

anyone can submit a tax return whether qualified or not. It all depends on whether you want to promote your business as being able to do tax returns under the AAT banner?

Yes, there would be no reason why you couldn't prepare and submit tax returns but it could be that the AAT qualification doesn't support this because it may not be in the syllabus.

Another interesting thought (and this is for everyone) is that if you do prepare tax returns you should also be registered under the data protection act as you are dealing with personally identifiable information.
