Had a frustating afternoon trying to custom install Sage Instants V17. Anyway I already hace 2 other Sages instants on my laptop for other clients, so thought custome install was best. Got into the custom install and renames the path no probs even took out the Sage bit altogether, well on the box underneath where it says put your own path in it highlights the 2 Sages I already have (hightlights one of them) and basically won't un highlight itself!!!!! So although I put a new name in it then installs itself back into the originall field which I don't want.
I checked with the company I bought it from and they said it should be alright but I'm not so sure! When I click into both icons ones comes up with C:\ProgramData\Sage\Accounts\2011\Company.000 thats the new one.
The old one comes up with "C:\Program Files\Sage\Instant\" Does this mean this is OK, as when I click on the old one it flashed up with the 'NEW' Sage start screen and then reverts back to the correct screen and my log in password as normal. I have checked the old one and its all as it should and no files have disappeared. Can someone (probably Shaun I think your the computer whizz kids on here), just tell me if they are OK in those paths, as I have uninstalled it 4 times now and tried different things.
the problem that your having is that Sage wasn't built to have multiple versions, it was built to keep taking your money for upgrading to the latest version.
However, as you've found out. It is quite possible to tyre lever multiple versions onto your system.
The issue comes with the windows registry that gets updated by each version of Sage and sometimes it puts different files in the same place so it can get a bit mixed up as to what it's starting.
Again though the startup exec that you kickstart each time is driving the process and even though one or two things may seem amiss you are actually running the correct version of the program.
One thing worth noting here though, again linked to the registry is that with Sage the last version that you install will be the one that Excel automatically links to although again that shouldn't cause any major compatibility issues (even assuming that you use it to link to Excel).
I'm waffling. short answer is that you should find that everything works ok but just bear in mind that occassionally the registry might be a bit confussed as to which version of the software it's running.
Hope that puts your mind at rest.
Talk soon,
Shaun.

thanks for the info. So I should be alright then with 3 different versions on it? (3 different clients' work?) I was going to change him to QB but its a long story as its best he stays on sage, I don't mind as I can use either. Cheers
I'm sure that Amanda will be very happy with your appraisal of Sage Instants Eshaa83.
I'm also sure though that Amanda knows far more about Sage Instants (and Line 50 and Quickbooks) than you ever will. The question related to the far more complex issue of having three different versions installed on one PC not about what the product did.
You really neeed to start reading the posts properly rather than just posting random answers based on a word that you recognise.

As far as I am aware you are only allowed 2 versions of the same software for Sage.
I belong to the accountants club and each year it gives me a headache with which version to get rid as my clients are on any from version 8 upwards, the latest version is supposed to allow back ups to clients version, though the latest version I have is still sitting in the box, but if it works it will be good.
I was told it would be OK as renamed the path, but how knows!! Anyway regarding backing up I was told that if I had say V17 on mine I could not back it up if a client had V12. Although you can do it the other way round. Was also told that if you have Windows 7 you can only have one version on you computer. Luckily I am on Vista so I don't think it applies. I find it a pain to be honest.
Hi all, You are correct - rename the pathway - err to caution is on Version 2007. This has to sit outside the other versions (although this may only be vista). C:/Sage 2007 (renamed pathway) The rest will be: c:/program files/ sage/renamed file (ie accounts 2008, accounts 2009 etc.)
I find it easier to go the C drive and prepare the named files first then browse to new file when setting up.

Thanks for the info, sorry to sound abit thick but what do you mean go to the C Drive first and prepare the named file?? sorry I am not a whiz when it comes to techy stuff on the PC.
No worries amanda - if you want to email me I will send over screen shots. but basically start / computer / c drive (if vista) open c drive and if you have Version 2007 create a new file called sageline50 2007 (right mouse click, new folder). Load sage and brose to the created file and you will need to save there. Any newer version can go in program file area. start / computer c drive / program files - create a new file called Sage20xx Load the "oldest" version and browse to the new file you have created. Prior to loading next disk create a new file Sage20xx
etc.
Load using the file restore from a back up.
