there have recently been a number of posts from a poster going by the name of Eshaa83.
We believe her to be a spammer but this one is better than most as she patches onto existing threads so that her posts are burried in legitimate discussions.
Sure that you've seen the various reactions to her posts including one newbie being quite upset at assuming that the posts were condescending.
This poster is posting random comments and advice in threads from a position of obviously knowing absolutely nothing about the subject matter so at best the posts detract from the flow of the threads. At worst we've already had one newbie who thought that Eshaa83 was being condescending towards her.
I think that I can see the strategy here. The poster post random comments throughout the site and then when they reach say 100 posts they add a link to their signiture.
I don't know if this would be possible but just a suggestion.
don't allow new members to post external links in their signature or profile until they reach Senior member status.
Don't allow people to progress beyond Newbie regardless of their number of posts until they have proven that there is some credence to their posts.
That last one would mean reviewing the first few posts of new members and I know that you are busy people so that may not be feasible however I do worry that if something isn't done spammers will keep hitting the site as they seem to be doing with increasing regularity (the bane of success I suppose!).
Alternatively how about Guru's and above signing off on new members to progress from Newbie? I for one would be quite happy to sign up for that in order to keep the site safe from spammers.
Just a suggestion.
In the short term, as mentioned above please keep a weather eye on Eshaa83 before they post something that one of our members either takes serious offence at or acts upon believing her advice to be legitimate.
Hope that you're having a good bank hol,
all the best,
Shaun.

I wonder what gibberish she will post in response to this. I thought she was reading posts and making some kind of attempt at an answer based on what was posted. But after that last post on another thread I'm not sure she will.
Maybe she'll post "Good advice. Very motivational"

she was posting random gibberish again last night.
Can nothing be done to both delete this poster with extreme prejudice and also permanently ban the ip adress that she is using to stop her cropping up two minutes after erradicating her as Eshaa84!
many thanks in advance,
Shaun.
P.S. there would be no problem deleteing the contents of all of her posts but please don't delete all of the threads that she has posted her drivel in as she's been patching onto some quite important recent conversations.

What's this about the 100 posts and link in signature? I've noticed a few links in signature point back to the thread they are on - does the link only become active after 100 posts?

no, what I'm saying is that a poster could add posts to numerous threads over a long period of time and then when they decide that they have enough threads (50, 100, 500) they add a link in their signature.
Bosh, the link is embedded all over the site.
Wouldn't take much for site admin to remove it again but that's the only logic that I can see behind embedding posts all over the place.

Many thanks for your posts regarding this member. We can confirm we have looked into the situation and duly banned the user Eshaa83 for breach of forum rules. All posts made by this member have also been deleted.
Thank you also for the interesting suggestions regarding new members. This is something we will look into ASAP.
With the amount of new users joining (approx 10 new users a day) and the number of posts/threads increasing, the amount of work that goes into moderating is increasing.
Shaun, would you like to have moderator privileges? This would enable you to edit and moderate posts. This is something we have been considering for a while and is something we may offer to users with over 2000 posts (although it will obviously be at our discretion). This is a community forum for book-keepers by book-keepers and it only makes sense that members have a greater say in how The Book-keepers Forum operates. This is something we have seen operating quite successfully on other forums. Please let us know your thoughts.
Still on track for tomorrow. No major issues in testing yet (except for the recent posts button problem which is now fixed). Most of our time is now being spent air brushing our profile pics!
I would be more than happy to moderate posts but despite the seeming evidence to the contrary I'm not on here all of the time so there may still be some spammers that get past me.
Just let me know what I have to do to edit or remove posts.
Actual banning of userids though I assume will always remain only with site admin so for that perhaps best we contact you directly via email or the site as we did in this instance in order to highlight suspect members.
Good luck with the impending launch.
kind regards,
Shaun.
P.S. to everyone else, I'll tell you all where to send the envelopes stuffed with used tenners later!

I've been out for a couple of days, and it all kicks off.
Congratulations Shaun, can't think of any one better suited to be a Moderator (although I think it's a bit like giving methadone to an opioid addict ). Youve got the perfect excuse to be on here 24/7
Looking foward to seeing you "in action", and hope I'm not the first to be deleted.
