Gaining Experience
Permalink Closed

Hi, Im 20, ive completed the OUs B680 certificate in accounting and have little to no accountancy work experience. I realise getting an actual paying job at this point would be extremely lucky but I should be able to find unpaid work experience yes? In regards to getting work experience I would appreciate answers to the following questions.

1 Im going to be shadowing a self-employed book keeper for a few days soon, What sort of questions should I ask? What should I pay attention to? How do I make the most out of it?

2 I have sent speculative emails to various accountancy companies in my area asking for work experience, being very flexible, paid, unpaid, temporary, permanent etc. What else should I be doing to secure some experience? What other businesses should I target? What other methods should I use?

3 Any other advice that might be useful?

Thanks

Well done on B680, it's an excellent starting point.

As you are still quite young and have passed a serious qualification already have a look at local accountancy practices who would be willing to take you on on an AAT training contract. I think that you are still young enough to get them funding for this under the apprenticship scheme but you might want to confirm that directly with the AAT.

You will have already done almost everything on the AAT syllabus but by taking that route you should be able to secure a role in a practice experience from which will prove priceless.

Good luck with landing that dream role. Be quick though as I think that you're right on the boundary of getting funding for your emplloyer (you may already be too old at 20 but I hope not as you've put the effort in the get B680 under your belt).

kind regards,

Shaun.
