This is probably a question for those computer boffins out there or Sage Lovers out there. I have a really old version of Sage V10 on my laptop ( I know its really old), the client is only an annual one and he gave me the software at the beginning a few years ago, as when they were doing it themselves they had brought 2 discs, hence one came my way as it had been un opened and thrown in the back of the cupbaord. Anyway some of the reports it won't let me print on Vista, so up until now that was not a problem as my son had a laptop that had XP on it so I use to load up the disc, take a back up and restore it on my sons laptop and hey presto all the reports printed out fine. But tonight my sons Laptop finally gave up the ghost and isn't repairable!!! Took it to a local shop that specialises in fixings laptops and basically the hardrive has gone and not worth repairing. Anyway to cut a long story short I am going to buy a new laptop for him with Windows 7 on it and upgrade to the Professional Windows 7 which apparently has abit on it where you can go into it and it will revert to XP somehow and he said it might work? He can't guarantee it but said if I take my Sage disc in there he will put it on a machine and we can try it and see if I can print ok. So just wondering before I go in does anyone know if this will work??? If it doesn't unfortunately I can't put him on QB as the accountant doesn't like it, so my other option is to get Sage 14 or 16 instants that I don't have on my Laptop and buy it and install it. Unfortunately I can't charge the client on this one so I would have to take the hit, which isn't ideal but at least I know that its regular work each year ( a dad at school).
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated as you'll know form other posts I am not a techy person at all!!!!
Don't know if you are aware but vista also has a compatability mode which lets you run old software. Search "compatabilty " in the start menu help section and there should link that opens the Compatabilty Mode.
I have heard that it is not always successful but used it a couple of times, and it worked on an old version of MS Office. You set it to the operating system you know it works on (XP compatible)
Windows offer a free download of 'XP Mode' via their website - just head to the Microsoft Download Center. Basically it is a virtual PC. You run it from the start menu, it will look like XP, and run any old programs you used to have on XP. I use it quite a bit for various things.
The most important part though is that it still accesses your normal drives and printers, so assuming you install Sage V10 on their, you will be able to print no problem. It will also let you start up non-compatible windows 7 software, by running the virtula machine in the background.
