I qualified with IAB a few years ago, but stayed in employment with
accountancy doing credit control until now. I want to start Bookkeeping business, but the only thing I cannot get any info on - is the practical aspects.
What format do you submit your work back to business in?
What do you do with the receipts etc- sort date order, serial number?, put onto spreadsheet?
What is the reasonable time to ask customer to wait for process.
I cannot find any info on this side of it anywhere, I guess the only people who could help is someone who has actually done it
Have you been to the IAB website, loged into the members only area, and taken a look at the members handbook. There you will find lots of info and documents you will need to help with your new business.
But the practical aspects are dependant on the client and you preferences. Admitted you learn by experience that the smaller the business, the less they want to pay for bookkeeping and therefore the less time you can take to do the work. So you quickly learn to adapt and work out the best way for you to do the work and for the client to be happy with the work you produce. Some clients are happy to wait others are not. Communications with clients is really important, and set ground rules on what you can cope with.
Its often a good idea to "chat" to other bookkeepers about specifics as its too difficult to get a good answer if your questions are to general.
I hope you come back to this website and join in again!
