Business Directory Scam still going strong
Permalink Closed

Hi all, this may well have been discussed before, but for all of those out there newish to the forum and registering companies, the new incoorporations will most likely get a letter from the Business Internet Directory offering you free listing.  This scam has been going for years in the UK, (see this Daily Mirror investigation from 2006 http://blogs.mirror.co.uk/investigations/2006/06/fury-over-business-internet-di.html) and has gone global (see http://blogs.mirror.co.uk/investigations/2009/08/eu-business-services-takes-the.html).

If you check the small print on the back of the free listing invite, it is full of terms and conditions and is not free at all.  If you even ring to say you are not interested, they take that as a booking, and you will be charged anyway.

They work by charging you about £450 for advertising for an ad that you think is free, and then lay on the heavy handed tactics by passing your details to the likes the charmers at Moorcroft debt collectors to be bullied further.  They do not take people to court, but work on the fact that some people do get scared and pay up.

The director has been prosecuted in the UK by trading standards, but he just paid the fine and carried on regardless.
