I realise this is a question asking for the above reply!!
I am currently book-keeping a job on Sage. I have 12 months of sales and purchase invoices that I have put on and am now reconciling the Bank. There are around 180 transactions on the account a month and my question is, how long would you estimate each monthly rec to take? Obviously I am applying receipts and payments to the correct invoices where possible but some are POA.
I am taking nearly 3 hours which I find excessive!! I am adding up all the small expence transactions for petrol and doing the same for cash drawings then doing one figure at the end of the month but it seams to take an age.
You're a bookkeeper not a speed typist (although some bookkeepers that I've seen let loose with a numberpad on the side of their keyboard are just plain terrifying at the speed they type).
I'm sure that you could get it wrong in half the time but clients pay for quality and if three hours is what it takes then that is what it takes.
Personally I've just done 92 transactions and took me just over an hour. If I had 180 in the batch it's only human nature that I would slow down after a while (we're not machines) so the three hour mark (one per minute) is not to my mind excessive... Others may disagree with that but I think that you doing alright matey.
All the best,
Shaun.

It depends a lot with a bank rec on whether or not the transaction are same on bank as on Sage bank or whether Sage has lumped several together for the same day, etc. If this is the case you need to change the bank default settings.

I one of those that can type relatively fast and I'm even quicker with the number keypad at the side. Occasionally I go on my hubbys laptop which is a basic one and only has the numbers across the top which I find so frustrating, it slows me right down!
Tony- I would say that sounds about right I'm sure it may become abit faster once you get to know the business, I have one I do every quarter and to be honest I have been doing it for a long time and can practically do it with my eyes closed, also its makes a difference as hes fairly organised and not normally anything missing. I always thinks it takes a while to get to know someones business.
