Someone I know wants to voluntarily register for VAT.  The thing is he buys/raises/sells cattle & sheep.  When he sells the animals there obviously isn't any vat on this fee but he says that there is vat on the auction selling fees.  I thought because the actual thing he's selling is VAT exempt that he wouldn't be able to voluntarily register for VAT would he?

Hi Suffolker

Livestock are zero rated, so it should be possible to register OK

I have a client who is an egg producer (well his chickens are) and he is registered and always gets a VAT refund.
