VAT on Virgin Media invoices - what can I reclaim?
Permalink Closed

Hi

Just a quickie and prob very easy. I think I know the answer, just need it confirmed to me.

I'm looking at a Virgin media bill and deciding what I can reclaim VAT wise. The call charges are easy - the invoice details the VAT element separately.

I'm finding the service charge - which is made up of line rental, talk unlimited, a discount (I think because all the services are used), TV, HD fee and finally broadband - a bit more tricky to decide on. The invoice says 'includes VAT at the appropriate rate'. Ok, I'll assume that's 20% - agreed?

But how much of the input VAT on service charges can I reclaim? All of it?, even though some of the charge is for HD TV, which I'm pretty sure wouldn't be considered a business expense!

And can I reclaim any? The invoice does not show the VAT rate, the amount or even a VAT registration number. But it's Virgin, so surely I can assume they are VAT registered, can't I?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Maria

I have a similar issue with Virgin Media and other phone/broadband/etc invoices.

And from what you have put you cannot claim back the VAT as the document that you have is not actually a VAT invoice and it may state this on it somewhere. You can try to contact them to request a VAT invoice but they may not be that forthcoming with the it.

Regards

Mark

Thank you.

I have since found a VAT number on the invoice - so now what can I claim with regards to service charges please.

Maria

Have been looking even further and just read about simplified VAT invoices for retail sales of goods/services under £250, inc VAT.

Therefore I should be able to take my Virgin Media bill, extract the VAT element and claim that....still not sure what to do about the TV bit though.....

......anyone??
