As a bookkeeper I understand that I have to keep my clients details private, so if I were to see a new potential client and they owned a hairdressing salon for example and they asked if I had any other hairdressers on my books, I could say yes, but not specify where or their company name.
Say I am with one of my clients and they are looking for a service that one of my other clients provides, how would I go about referring them and could I?
I assume that I would have to go back to my client and ask them if they were happy for me to refer them to to another client.
Or, could I just give them the other clients details but not tell them that they were a client of mine.
I hope that makes sense, it's been a long day. I am preparing to visit a new client tomorrow at their premises and I am very nervous. I have just been reading my ML file (refreshing my brain after maternity leave) and it has fried my brains
As long as the client is aware your recommending them, then why would they complain? Your sending more business their way! I hear your predicament, the person im working for at the moment is of a similar ilk. He has been asked to recommend an accountant to his clients, but as he cant he doesn't... instead he has employed me to do the work for him and fingers crossed I can get my AAT and work for him full time.
One thing i would say, which I was told by my current 'employer' is, If you wouldn't use them yourself then don't recommend them. Because, IF, the new relationship between your clients goes sour, YOU, yourself could end up loosing TWO clients!
Generally business people are always happy to get new business.
But what you can do, is when you get a new client tell them that you usually persons to clients when biz ops presents itselt. That way you know right off the bat how the person feels about it.
However, with regards to old clients, maybe you should ask if it would be okay to refer someone to them to be on the safe side.
