Open University B190 and the IAB

Hello!

I'm new to this site, just wanted to say hello and also to ask for help

I have worked for many years in purchase and sales ledger roles, PAYE and bookeeping, but have never taken any related qualifications.

I have the usual general qualifications, GCSE's and a couple of science A'Levels.

I have taken the last 5 years out, due to looking after my daughter, and now i'm desperate to get back into work.

I'm finding it quite hard to re-join the market place again, so i'm thinking of taking B190 with the OU.

I would consider taking more advanced courses but money is tight!

I'm just looking for some advice really.

Thanks!

Hi Paula,

as this is a revision course rather than coming to bookkeeping completely fresh have you thought about self studying directly with the ICB or IAB to gain a bookkeeping qualification with them?

The material covered is very much the same as B190 and you will find membership of one of those two bodies more beneficial to you as a bookkeeper in the future.

Alternatively, as you suggest B190 is an excellent course. It will actually give you full exemption from IAB membership which coming from your background does seem to be ok but in some cases where people are new to bookkeeping I do disagree with the amount of exemption that it can bestow.

Using study and membership of ICB or IAB fingers cossed you will be able to land a role working in an accounts office again and once there maybe the study bug will have bitten and you go on to study AAT or even ACCA?

Whatever you do the very best of luck going forwards.

If you do decide to do OU B190 it will not be a mistake but it does seem an expensive option as a revision course where reading the books and sitting the exams of one of the book-keeping bodies could be done relatively cheaply (things get a lot more expensive when you move up to AAT / ACCA but you will fingers crossed be in a good position by then).

Kindest regards,

Shaun.

Hi Shaun,

What a great idea!! I will definately have a look into it, although I should be able to get some financial help for B190.

I'm hoping that having a professional membership will help me find more realistic work. At the moment I seem to be offered alot of admin roles, which are poorly paid.

Thanks again!
